Nintendo 3DS

Is 2011 the year of 3D?

3D TVs, 3D Movies, 3D consumer cameras, and Nintendo intends in bringing it to handheld gaming with the Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo has come back from the brink of failure to one of the successes in this gaming generation. But in the previous year, the shine on the Wii has waned and the DS is now six years into it’s lifespan. We’ve seen the DS smaller, bigger and lighter. Now it’s going to be in 3D.

As someone who wears glasses, 3D is a pain. Looking through two sets of lenses that one or another will not be on the right angle is a headache. The 3DS will not need additional lenses. That is great sigh of relief. But at $249.99?

It’s pricey. Not something that you would expect from Nintendo. Just a little perspective, the original NDS came out at $169.99. It’s even more than the Wii at that price. You can get a PS3 or an Xbox360 at that price. Or even an iPod Touch. Expect a price drop when the Sony NGP comes out but even then, it will be a stretch.

The Nintendo 3DS offers a lot by including the great things from the NDS such as dual screen, NDS compatibility and a SD card slot. new things include the analog controller, telescoping stylus, and motion sensor.

Nintendo 3DS hits stores on March 27. http://www.nintendo.com/3ds

Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 Review

Mass Effect 2 PS3 IGN Video Review

I’ve played through it twice and here’s my take on it.

PS3 owners have had to wait an eternity for this game make it on Sony’s console from the Xbox but thankfully Bioware has delivered the same game (almost) with a few perks.

The PS3 version is the best version of the game visually uses the Mass Effect 3 engine. The clothes look more detailed. You can now tell the difference between armor and spandex. The scars on Shepard’s face are rougher and things seem a bit brighter. Add to the fact that all three DLCs (Overlord, Kasumi, and Lair of the Shadow Broker) are included, it makes playing it a bit better.

The blu-ray media allows the entire game to played off a single disc without having to swap anything out (see Xbox version). But it requires a mandatory 6GB install from the disc and you’ll need to download the Cerberus Network content from the Playstation Store after you’ve created your EA Account. Though it is possible to go through the game without the Cerberus Network, it is the only way to see the comic book which explains the events of the first game. This is a pain.

The comic book is the only way to create decisions in the first chapter to affect the events of this game. That will take another 900++ MB download. Even then, it’s still not complete and this is where my disappointment with the game lies.

Sure, the comic book lets you easily choose who to save, who to rescue, who you have a relationship with. But there are glaring differences in the game, especially if you’ve played through the Xbox version.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

These are events that never happen in the PS3 game but happen in the Xbox version.

Missing characters:
Helena Blake, the crime lord who asks you to get rid of her rivals which you are given a choice to either kill her or convince her to give up her life of crime. If you picked the paragon path, you’ll see her again on Omega.

Rana Thanoptis, you encounter the Asari scientist in the first game in Virmire. If you let her go, you’ll see her again while recruiting the Krogan Warlord.

Shiala, if you let her live after defeating the Thorian in Feros, she stays behind to help the colonists. She once again needs your help in Illium.

Conrad Verner, your number one fan. Does not appear in the Dark Star Lounge in Illium.

Gianna Parsini, the detective you help out in Noveria (surprise, surprise!) needs your help in an entrapment operation. You still get to talk to the merchant but now you are able to get discounts from her kiosk on Illium.

Nassana Dantius. She plays a pivotal role in Mass Effect 2 since she is the target of Thane Krios, the assassin you’re trying to recruit. You help her kill her sister in the first game, but now she’s never met you in her entire life.

Not really a missing event but I can’t stand the bug where if you chose Liara in the first chapter as your love interest, Kaidan’s picture appears instead. There’s also the annoying clipping of edges of your character while playing. This is really bothersome especially in the Overlord mission.

With the exception of Giana Parsini, all the other characters can be missed. However, these are the details which make the game fun to play. To be able to see the results of the decisions you made brings a little smile to my face. But not to see them makes me feel the game seems to be missing something.

So which is better? Where shall I continue the adventures of Shepard and the Normandy?

This leads me to conclude that I will end up playing both games. Though the PS3 is superior in technology, the story is what matters to me and the Xbox still delivers the complete package for the game with all the decisions, side quest results and the characters you let live in the previous game.

Thank you Bioware for making such a great game. I’ll be sad to see it go once it finishes in Mass Effect 3.

Shake Shack

Shake Shack, originally uploaded by mdelamerced.

I’m very particular on what I eat and this burger is one of the best I’ve had in a very long time. Be prepared for long lines during lunch and dinner. A shack burger will cost you $4.75 made from angus beef. But that will not be enough. You must get the double burger version. Vegetarian options available. Wide variety of drinks available from sodas to milkshakes. You must try this at least once.

First apps purchased

Twitter, Frame Calculator, Courier, Sound Cloud

Thanks to the heads up by the people behind Mac Heist, there’s a Super Secret preferences pane just for those who purchased Tweetie that came with the Mac Heist bundle released a year ago. This is to be my first app download from the store.

Tweetie, which was purchased by Twitter is known just as the Twitter app and feels like “a Snow Leopardy” version of Twitter. Great feature is the ability to just start typing to be able to tweet and Growl notifications for the tweets that mention you or direct messages. Much better than sending you every single tweet. Though I wished it had Twitterific’s ability to see public tweets. But I can see on how that can be a problem by the sheer volume of tweets that will be loaded. Available for free on the app store.

Frame Calculator is a great app for those who work with video a lot (attn: film students). It’s a never ending problem on determining how much space your project is going to need. Free on the app store.

Courier is the first app I purchased from the store. I took advantage of the $4.99 (originally $24.99) price tag from Realmac Software to be able to upload media to a variety of sites I choose. There are preconfigured settings for mobileme, facebook, youtube, vimeo, flickr as well as the ability upload to an FTP site or an AmazonS3 account. Just enter your login settings for the desired service, drop the file and send it.

Sound Cloud

Sound Cloud is an app with the main purpose to share sound. Registration and the mac app is free. It gives you the opportunity to discover music or sounds from other people and share it with your friends. It works best via the iPhone app ($1.99) which uses your iPhone as a recorder and send it straight away to the service. The app requires registration via the web prior to use. But with any social service, it’s only good as long as your friends are with you for the ride.

There you have it! The first few apps I’ve tried and so far I’m pleased with what I’ve downloaded. I’m sure there’s more out there. I can’t wait until WWDC 2011 in June.

35,000 feet with 5 hours to go

I knew I had to try the inflight wifi while going to New York. For this trip, the wifi was free. I quickly checked in foursquare and got the Mile High badge. Gogoinflight provides the service on this Delta flight who also services other airlines such as Virgin America and American Airlines.

Internet is provided in the air via two ways. One is via satellite as the signal is sent to receivers on the aircraft while the most common method is via cellular towers on the ground. This is the reason why inflight wifi is only available over land.

I will be tweeting more in the next four hours to see if Internet is better than television at 30,000 ft.

The only app store you’ll need for your mac

Fire up that software update button and go up to 10.6.6 to be able to access the Mac App store from Apple.

In true Apple fashion it is easy to navigate through the menu. Much like the iTunes store but for apps. All of the iWork, iLife and Aperture apps are available for purchase to download including Remote Desktop. The app is intelligent enough to scan you application folder for the apps but it only works for Apple applications (for now?)

The store is very Apple like. If you know how to buy songs and apps off the iTunes Store, the Mac App store shouldn’t be a problem. Though it seems like the interface is still missing something like a side window for it to really look like the iTunes store.

Could that be in the future? Both the iTunes store and the App store will eventually merge and then iTunes will finally just be about managing your digital assets in your computer? Maybe? I’m just guessing here.

I can see the market that this fills. For those who just bought a mac and are lost with the tens and thousands of applications available including which one is real and which isn’t, this is a great starting point. The Garmin Base Camp app for the mac is a good example of this. I remember eternally searching back and fourth through the Garmin website looking for the app compatible with my mac. I eventually found it but the App store would have saved me hours searching.

Great apps that are already here are the OMNI series (Graffle, Foucs, Plan, Outliner and so on). Most if not all of the apps on the MacHeist bundles of past are also here.

Popular games such as Bejeweled, Angry Brids, and Enigmo are now just a click away. Sorry PvZ (Plants vs Zombies) fans it’s not here (yet).

Paying for these great apps are linked to your Apple store account which is much easier than entering your credit card information every single time or trying to remember your Paypal account. Piracy of apps is also rampant. Developers would be happy about the DRM but according to macnn the DRM has already been cracked. Expect an update to be released very soon.

Will this be the future of buying apps? Yes. It makes it faster and easier for applications to find their customers and vice versa. Physical discs will still be around a little longer. But when this becomes successful, expect all the apps to be delivered this way. But what about applications such as Logic Pro (installation is roughly 90GB) In my opinion, it’s only a matter of time.

YouTube – Dragon Age II Rise To Power .mov.

The follow up to one of the best RPGs of 2009 is drawing near. This latest video from Bioware gives us a glimpse of the gameplay and the characters that our “Hawke” will be going through.

It is known that the game will NOT follow the character you made in Dragon Age: Origins or in Awakenings. But instead put you in the shoes of a new character named Hawke (which could be male or female). Think of it as Commander Shepard of Mass Effect placed into the world of Thedas.

I’ll actually miss being called “Warden” by everyone in the game. Now they’ll just refer to me as Hawke or “The Champion”. That’s just weird for me at the moment. But look on the bright side, I’ll probably live longer than any Grey Warden and there will be more adventures with thus character than the Grey Wardens.

But I do wish Bioware fixes the bugs with the DLCs and expansions for Origins. Especially if they plan on using the choices you made in that game carry over to make the world that Hawke has to fight his way through.

Dragon Age II hits shelves on the busy day of March 3, 2011.

Dissidia Final Fantasy 2

YouTube – DISSIDIA 012[duodecim] FINAL FANTASY JF2011 Trailer.

The PSP fighting game which brought together the main heroes of every Final Fantasy game ever made (and I do mean every game every made, what ever were they thinking when they brought in Shantoto for FFXI is beyond me, she was more like an anti-hero to me) against their corresponding nemesis has a sequel. Yes, Dissidia Final Fantasy is coming back with the addition of Lightning from FF13.

But judging from the trailer. There’s a whole lot of new characters as well. Vaan fron FF12, Yuna from FF10, Laguna fron FF8, Cain fron FF4?, and Tifa from FF7.

I was already impressed by the first game, this should be nothing less. But I wish Square-Enix would bring to the PS3. It would be a refreshing change from all the Street Fighters and Tekkens and all the other brawlers out there.

Dissidia Final Fantasy 2 comes out in Japan and the US on March 2011.

Mass Effect 2 DEMO on the PS3

Recap comic book

One year after Xbox and PC gamers got their hands on the best game of 2010, it’s finally coming to the PS3. For my review of the Xbox version of the game it can be found here.

But why only Mass Effect 2? What about Mass Effect 1? How will Bioware have decisions from the first game carry over to the second game if there is no first game for the PS3?

In a recent podcast , PS3 Mass Effect producer Jesse Houston was interviewed by the Bioware Blog on the challenges and changes with the PS3 version.

Bioware has employed an interactive comic book type prologue to explain the events of Mass Effect. Dark Horse comics, who also published Mass Effect: Redemption, which narrates the events in between the opening events of the game to the present. During these comic book sequences, the player then has a chance to decide the path of the story that their Commander Shepard experiences in the first game.

I just recently completed a playthrough of the PS3 version and there are differences. Though it’s still the same game, the PS3 is graphically superior. The shading is not as vivid as the Xbox but there’s a lot more detail. I can the weathering of the uniforms and the difference between the armor that Shepard wears and the fabric of the Cerberus uniforms of Miranda and Jacob. Though there were a few sound issues during the demo it’s still fairly the same. Button layout was initially a bit confusing. On the Xbox, the Right Bumper was used to bring up the abilities menu and the Right Trigger is to fire the selected weapon. The PS3 is the opposite, R1 will fire and R2 will choose the abilities. I kept forgetting that and ended up either firing weapons I didn’t want to or abilities. But I’m sure I’ll get used to it soon enough. The interrupt triggers for paragon and renegade decisions are still there and so far I haven’t made a mistake just yet.

Judging from the demo, I’m definitely buying this and playing this again. The PS3 version also comes out with the 3 DLCs (Overlord, Kasumi, and Lair of the Shadow Broker).

One can also infer from the podcast that the holiday 2011 release date for Mass Effect 3 will be simultaneous for the PC, Xbox and PS3.

Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 lands on January 18.
