Final Fantasy XIV @ E3

Final Fantasy XIV, The E3 Trailer

It’s been six years since I started playing Final Fantasy XI when it was released for the PS2 and I haven’t looked back. I was a mac user and I wasn’t exactly in the mood to jump on to the MMO bandwagon by getting a PC so I was very excited when Square-Enix announced that they would be releasing their MMO on consoles as well. I find this MMO unique since players from different countries play on the same server but play on different consoles (PS3, PS2, Xbox360, PC). No other game other than WOW (World of Warcraft) does this (PC and Mac compatible).

It was difficult as first as the game was designed largely for people to team up in order to advance to the next level. I inched my way through the game and now it’s time to release another version of the game.

This week at E3 in Los Angeles, Square-Enix has released new videos of the game and a possible release date of Q4 2010 for the PC and PS3.

Domina Shantotto’s annoying quests

Now that the fall update for FFXI has arrived players in Vana’diel can now play the third add on scenario which deals with everyone’s lovable (sarcasm) black mage, Shantotto.

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD

FINAL FANTASY XI “A Shantotto Ascension” — New Trailer

Shantotto is up to no good as she makes a mistake that sucks her into a portal. While leaving Windurst to Sarutabaruta, my moogle goes after me with a letter from Shantotto saying that I am now a member of her group and that I must head on to Quifim Island with a number of items in hand.

Now this is where this add-on gets really annoying. You’ll have to farm/ buy items found in the Maze of Shakrami, Gusgen Mines and Ordelle’s Caves. Synth these items together with other ingredients and bring them to Qufim Island. The sick part is farming them.

Picture this, everyone who purchased the add on is farming bats, crawlers and skeletons in these areas. It’s not a 100% drop. It’s rare/ex. The item can be bazaared as well as the synthed item. But you can’t sell the synth item.

The fact that you can sell the raw materials means every RMT player (real money trader) is camping out there for these items and selling them. Grrr… I just need 2! (Now that’s a hint).

On top of that, the items are not 100% synth. It’s a hit or miss. So if you lose one of the items during synthing, you’ll have to do the entire process again. That really sucks.

So in the meantime, I’ll subbing THF in the hopes that I’ll get the drop. It’s off to the Ordelle’s Caves for me for the last item. I need to make room. These things aren’t stackable.

Are you eligible for the Nexus Cape?

FINAL FANTASY XI Official Web Site
Yes it’s 2009 and I’m still playing Final Fantasy Online. On November 10, upon the release of the third add on scenario “Shantoto’s Ascension” Playonline will reward gamers who have all three scenarios with the Nexus cape.

According to the official Playonline website, “it’s an item that allows characters in a party to teleport to their leader’s location.”
However the teleport is limited in range as it does not allow you access to the Aht Urghan, Chains of Promathia, and Wings of the Goddess, caves, dungeons and the beastman areas. Bummer.

It’s very similar to the Tidal Talisman which was only available to players who purchased the actual Tidal Talisman last year. This item allowed players to teleport to pre-determined locations most notably between Aht Urghan and Nashmau for those on Salvage missions.

I can see the Nexus Cape to be of some worth to lower level characters who are leveling up in the said areas in a party. It’s of no use to those who are playing solo in the game. Higher level characters will find use when they are gathering for linkshell events such as Dynamis and for those who are in summoner parties.

This is an item that I wished I had when I was leveling my summoner and my white mage even. This item is especially useful when trying to get to areas such as Uleguerand Range, Attohwa Chasm, Beaucedine Glacier, Cape Terrigan, Valley of Sorrows, Behemoth’s Dominion and Norg.

Of course, the biggest downside is that your party leader has to be there FIRST and you’re all in the same party. We’ll see how my linkshell reacts to the accessory on November 10.

Qualifying players can pick up the item in the treasure coffer in the Tenshodo Headquarters in Lower Jeuno.

2008 Final Fantasy Fan Festival

Yes, it’s that time of the year again where Final Fantasy fans gather together in California and see what’s coming to world of Vana’diel. This time it was held in Hollywood. Although personally it seemed that last year’s event in Anaheim was much better but still both events were completely sold out.

This year didn’t bring any surprise to the players since it had already been announced the three paid “upgrades” to the game. As opposed to the Wings of the Goddess expansion which took players to the past. This series will take us to the future.

EGM Editor in Chief James Mielke went to Hollywood and got an exclusive interview with the creators of the game.

Each chapter is a paid update. Unlike previous expansions which had entire story lines and new jobs and areas, these “chapters” are too short to require the printing of new discs and too long to be included in the monthly updates to the game.

Now this isn’t right

Square Enix: Epic Hard FFXI Boss Killed In One Minute

I don’t think that this is right at all. The boss that was once called “unbeatable” until Square-Enix game masters teamed up and posted the video online that they defeated Absolute Virtue has now been toned down and conquered by a linkshell in the Pandemonium server. Of course they were well armed with Kraken clubs and all to beat the high notorious monster down.

I call this rubbish. I think that the bar should stay as high. They should give players the option to play the updated weaker version and the original version. Or at least not lose XP while doing the battle would also be great. But to beat Absolute Virtue in one minute means it’s faster to beat than Kirin or any of the other notorious monsters in the game.

That’s just not right.

What happens if you trade a stack of Imperial Bronze Pieces to your moogle?

Apparently 99 Imperial Bronze pieces will make your locker valid until April 18, 2010. Or 99 weeks since one bronze piece will give you a week on your locker. Well it sure beats the whole thing expiring at you.

Is Ixion the next summoning avatar?

Ixion is Come!

That’s not a typo on my part. That is how it is exactly written on the Final Fantasy XI Official Web Site. But my question remains, is Ixion one of the new avatars for summoners.

Just for a short refresher, the summoner job first made it’s appearance in the Rise of the Zilart expansion. Technically this was the first expansion for the series but it was already included in the North American release of the game. The summoner is a classic job seen in the Final Fantasy series. Often changing their “summons” in almost every incarnation of the game but it still remains the same. Aeon, avatar, summons, guardian force, it all basically allows the character to call upon another power to fight for it. Each summon is usually linked to a magical element. The summoner job is a mage job (duh!).

The last avatar update was Diabolos in the Chains of Promathia expansion, the second expansion set in the series. Since then, two expansions have been released with no other avatar added to the summoner ability. Announced in the Final Fantasy Fan Festival last November, it was revealed by the developers that they were working on adding additional “avatars” to the jobs.

Ixion on the other hand I first encountered in Final Fantasy X. It was attributed to the lightning element. With Ramuh already in the series, what element will Ixion be in FFXI?

Just recently, character has reached level 75. The current maximum level for any player in the world of Vana’diel. And any new avatar would be welcome to the job. I hate getting invites to heal. Jeez go get a white mage. I would like this job to be more of a support damage dealer and hopefully this update will give it the respect that it deserves.

The census is out!

The 8th Vana’diel Census (05/16/2008) – FFXIclopedia – a Wikia Gaming wiki

For those who don’t play WoW (that’s World of Warcraft to noobs), Final Fantasy Online is the other popular MMO in the world and every year they publish a census of the game.

Interesting facts:

  • Male Tarutarus are the most popular player character across all servers.
  • 75% of players log in for 1-3 hours or less.
  • Warrior, White mage and Red Mage are the 3 most popular jobs.
  • The most common combination is the whitemage/blackmage.
  • 43% of players with the new expansion pack unlocked the Dancer job
  • Yagudo drinks have the highest selling rate in Jeuno’s auction houses
  • Cooking is the most crafted skill
  • 63.97% are raising yellow chocobos
  • Windurst Woods is the most common home point
  • The San d’Ordian Royal Army is the largest campaign group

The Return of PC Gaming

Macworld | Blizzcon 2008 to bring together Blizzard game fans

October 2008 will mark the entry of a PC game that’s not Scrabble or an MMO but still has the name Blizzard. Yes, fans it’s Blizzcon 08.

The two most anticipated PC games are expected to be shown if not playable! Diablo III and Starcraft II. Two franchises that drove me into many a sleepless nights whipping through the Zerg and the Undead. My Australian vacation turned into a marathon of leveling through Diablo.

I predict this event to be sold out very soon and if you’re in North America, grab a Southwest flight that lands near Anaheim and you’ll be on your way. I wish the FFXI would hold another fan fest this year.

Absolute Virtue

This is the only creature/ notorious monster that remains undefeated in FFXI. So to give players hint, Square-Enix released this five minute video on how they defeated Absolute Virtue.

Clever guys. At the most critical point, they zoom into the chat screen so you don’t really see what’s going on.

It took them roughly a few hours to defeat as far as I know. I’ll check if I can get my linkshell to do this uicide run for kicks.
