Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds Singapore

Tickets – Singapore – May 22 & 23 – 2009

If I can sum up the experience in one word, it would be wow.

I had dreamed of watching the concert for years ever since I heard the very first concert CD in 2002. I knew that I would have to go to Japan to watch it and it was up there along with a lot of unattainable things at the time. I then in 2004, I heard that the Final Fantasy concert would then be coming to Los Angeles, but my schedule would not be able to meet it. Thus the wait continued.

Fast forward to 2009. After seven years of waiting, I was finally able to watch the concert that I had only dreamed of watching years before. I heard about the Distant Worlds tour coming to Singapore and I immediately signed up for updates, while at the same time, saving up money for the trip. Singapore was the closest and most convenient place I could watch the concert. I had to get the tickets at all costs.

Come the month of March I was reminding myself everyday of the date that the tickets would go on sale and I knew that I had to be one of the first to get tickets. I anxiously waited for 9am to come and I bought my tickets at 9:12am. Now that I had the tickets, I had to book the rest of my travel plans.

I have waited patiently for this day to come and it has. It’s been a while since I watched a concert and eagerly looked forward to it. I had taken the morning flight of the concert since Singapore was only 3 hours away and the event was at night. I knew that I would have enough time to make it.

At around 5:30pm, two hours before the concert I decided to pick up the tickets. There was no line so I immediately got my tickets after showing them my passport and the credit card that was used to purchase the tickets. I signed for the tickets and headed out for dinner.

After walking around the Esplanade, we finally decided to eat at the sushi place. We quickly got through our meal and headed out to the concert hall.

Event sign

There was a stand that was selling various merchandise and I decided on the art book and the CD. I would’ve gotten the t-shirt if I had more cash at hand but it’s ok.

Schwag

I was not disappointed with the seats that I got. You must admit this is quite a view.

Not bad a view

Of course those seated below were much luckier, Nobuo Uematsu sat in the audience!

It’s been quite a while since I last saw a concert so this was very special. There was a lot of excited chatter in the concert hall until the lights dimmed and the spotlight focused on the leader of the Singapore Orchestra. He was shortly followed by Arnie Roth and then they proceeded to play Liberi Fatali from Final Fantasy 8. The screen above played edited 3D cutscenes from Final Fantasy 8. Although some were a bit repetitive, it was ok.

Mr. Roth would pause after two pieces and introduce the next one. Apparently, the playlist varies from place to place and Singapore was no different. Aside from the usual favorites such as “To Zanarkand” from Final Fantasy 10 and “Aerith’s Theme” from Final Fantasy 7, they played “Ronfaure” from Final Fantasy 11. It was quite a surprise to me since they previously have never played scenes from Final Fantasy Online. The actual concert was only an hour and half with a 20 minute intermission.

Since Singapore had a classical guitarist who was available, so they played “Vamo’ alla Flamenco” from Final Fantasy 9. Local tenors and a soprano added their voices to “Maria and Draco” from Final Fantasy 6. Of course there was the wonderful chorus to sing for “Liberi Fatali” and “Memoro de la Stono – Distant Worlds” from Final Fantasy Online.

The concert was over too soon and the audience demanded an encore. There was guy seated a few seats away from me who kept shouting. I believe he really was excited and a big fan of Uematsu-San. I guess some were a bit polite and weren’t clapping enough, I decided to clap even harder for the others to get the idea of the encore. Eventually they came back of course and proceeded to play one piece. Of course we all thought that it would be what “I know you are thinking of”, but instead they played “Terra’s Theme” from Final Fantasy 6.

I knew it wasn’t over yet since the chorus and orchestra weren’t moving from their seats. Uematsu-San came back in with Arnie Roth. Uematsu spoke a few words in Mandarin Chinese which thrilled the audience and then they proceeded to do a short survey conducted by Mr. Roth and Uematsu-San on which battle theme will be in the next round of Final Fantasy Concerts.

“Dancing Mad” from Final Fantasy 6 and “Jenova” from Final Fantasy 7. They will compile the results and make the decision from there. But definitely the next one is a battle theme.

All good things must come to an end and it wasn’t disappointing. Uematsu-san stood with the chorus as the orchestra played “One-Winged Angel” from Final Fantasy 7 with graphics from FF7 Advent Children filling the screens to the haunting tune.

I returned from Singapore tired but happy. I had fulfilled a dream I thought that would never come.

One game, two versions, same price

Final Fantasy: Echoes of Time Gets A Release Date: News from 1UP.com

The latest money maker for Square-Enix, Final Fantasy: Echoes of Time has now been given a US release date of March 24 for the Wii and DS. Both will retail for $39.99. My next question is, “why?!?!”

I know “Final Fantasy” is a premium title. That’s one of the reasons why they’re charging so much but for two different platforms? It’s not as if one is coming out on the Wii and then on the PS3. It’s coming out on a home console and a handheld. Handheld!

This is such a pain. I guess we know now where SE is getting the money to pay off for Lara Croft.

Final Fantasy XIII official trailer

FINAL FANTASY XIII | SQUARE ENIX

This is really late but you view the trailer from the official website or download it directly to your PS3 or Xbox360. Yes, I did say Xbox 360. It really is coming to the gaijin console. I’ll be posting a review of the Japanese demo once I get my hands on it.

2008 Final Fantasy Fan Festival

Yes, it’s that time of the year again where Final Fantasy fans gather together in California and see what’s coming to world of Vana’diel. This time it was held in Hollywood. Although personally it seemed that last year’s event in Anaheim was much better but still both events were completely sold out.

This year didn’t bring any surprise to the players since it had already been announced the three paid “upgrades” to the game. As opposed to the Wings of the Goddess expansion which took players to the past. This series will take us to the future.

Final Fantasy XI Preview for the PS2,PC,Xbox 360 from 1UP.com

EGM Editor in Chief James Mielke went to Hollywood and got an exclusive interview with the creators of the game.

Each chapter is a paid update. Unlike previous expansions which had entire story lines and new jobs and areas, these “chapters” are too short to require the printing of new discs and too long to be included in the monthly updates to the game.

Now this isn’t right

Square Enix: Epic Hard FFXI Boss Killed In One Minute

I don’t think that this is right at all. The boss that was once called “unbeatable” until Square-Enix game masters teamed up and posted the video online that they defeated Absolute Virtue has now been toned down and conquered by a linkshell in the Pandemonium server. Of course they were well armed with Kraken clubs and all to beat the high notorious monster down.

I call this rubbish. I think that the bar should stay as high. They should give players the option to play the updated weaker version and the original version. Or at least not lose XP while doing the battle would also be great. But to beat Absolute Virtue in one minute means it’s faster to beat than Kirin or any of the other notorious monsters in the game.

That’s just not right.

Not all is lost in Japan…yet

Rumor: Kingdom Hearts A PS3 Exclusive, Will Be Seen At TGS

The Tokyo Game Show is the next big gaming event on the calendar (WoW fans will argue that Bizzcon is the next gaming event) and it seems that Sqaure-Enix is busy trying to comfort die hard Sony fans that all is not lost with their favorite franchise.

Sure we’ve heard of Kingdom Hearts for the DS and the PSP. But get this on the PS3!! Not only that. It’s playable.

The unlikely marriage of Disney and Square in 2002 has proven to be one of the most lucrative team ups in gaming. I don’t see anything bad out of this but only good things. Another game to tide us over until Final Fantasy 13 is released.

Final Fantasy XIII Agito: Final Fantasy XIII For PSP Is Way, *Way* Off

Downside, FF13 Agito for the PSP will not be coming out until it’s console cousins FF13 and FF Versus 13 come out. They may change their minds. But I haven’t seen that happen. Well with the exception of FF13 going to the 360. It’s such a long way off. By that time a new PSP version might be out already and I would be playing my PS2 games on it and still FF13 isn’t out yet.

Sigh.

Dateline: Tokyo DKΣ3713

At the Square-Enix event in Tokyo, they seemed to announce things that would appease their loyal PS3 fans.

Final Fantasy XIII demo is heading for the PS3 in March 2009 which is bundled with the blu-ray version of FFVII Advent Children. This practically crushes any hope that it would be a surprise Holiday title.

Development of the Xbox 360 version will not begin until the PS3 version has been released.

PSP fans have everything to look forward to especially with Parasite Eve making it’s return.

My only problem with the announcements is that it makes me excited, next year. Sigh.

E3 is now over and how did we do?

I think I did pretty well in predicting some E3 announcements.

Things I got right

  • Animal Crossing for the Wii
  • Newer Xbox 360 (actually HD upgrade to 60GB)
  • Newer PS3 (now with dual shock 3 and 80 GB)
  • Star Wars Game for the iPhone (does it count as a major game?)
  • Pikmin for the Wii
  • Rock Band instruments are now cross compatible with future Guitar Hero games
  • Almost got it right with Bungie (if not for its “publisher”)

It’s not bad. I missed out on all the new Wii peripherals and no really redesign or controllers with any of the consoles.
The biggest surprise was certainly the Square-Enix jump to the 360. But Sony is apparently saving something for the Tokyo Game Show which happens this fall.

Hell has frozen over

Square Enix: Final Fantasy XIII Coming To Xbox 360

I’m sorry PS3 fans. It has happened. FFXIII is coming to the 360. The unthinkable has happened. Although it was not the only driver for me in buying the PS3 in the first place but it seems that the game has regionalized the gaming world with Japan with the PS3 and US and Europe for both the PS3 and 360.

Probably due to high production costs and low user base of the PS3, this prompted Square-Enix in sealing a deal with Microsoft. Surprisingly, in an interview with 1up.com, FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase says that development for the Xbox 360 version hasn’t actually begun. This means that this deal was made very recently. Hmmm.

But still, a lot of Square-Enix development is currently on the 360 with eventual release on the PS3. Are the days of exclusive games coming to an end?

It will be interesting to see how the 360 version will pan out with the game originally made with blu-ray in mind. Imagine cramming over 50GB of data on a number of DVDs on the 360.

Does this strike a nail in the coffin for the PS3? That remains to be seen. But personally, I’ll be getting this game on the PS3 because I prefer the controller and interface that Sony brings.

RPG on the 360

Square-Enix announced in Japan yesterday, not one, not two, not three, but FOUR new RPGs for the Xbox 360.

Star Ocean 4, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant and Tales of Vesperia will all be heading to the 360. It is widely known that the Xbox isn’t exactly performing as desired in Japan despite their “success” in North America. One of the reasons for this is the lack of “real” RPGs in Japan.

Mistwalker Studios, a company made up of former Square-Enix employees released Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey for the 360, but it failed to move console sales.

Will Square-Enix come to the rescue for the Xbox? I for one would actually buy all four to feed by RPG addiction. It may boost sales in Japan. But it’s no Final Fantasy.

Yes, PS3 owners are doomed to wait in 2009, or worse yet 2010. But it’s Final Fantasy. It’s not one, but two FF games at the same time. And there aren’t any other RPGs coming out in the horizon which makes the Xbox a lot more fortunate than the PS3.

If these RPGs somehow manage to move Xboxes out the door in Japan then it’s quite a feat and a great recovery for the Xbox in Japan. But if these games do not move in North America, then I wouldn’t be surprised if Square-Enix ports these games to the PS3 at a later date.
