Goodbye 1UP, Hello to whatever you guys plan on doing in the future

Gamasutra – Breaking: Ziff Davis Sells 1UP To UGO/Hearst, Closes EGM

Gamasutra breaks the bad news to the community that Electronic Gaming Monthly and the 1UP podcasts will be shutdown in the process. Most of the staff amounting to 30 talented individuals have been laid off.

This is a sad day for the gaming industry. EGM was one of the longest running magazines dedicated to video games but with the closing of these door I eagerly look forward to what they will come up with in the future. Much like what Ziff Davis did they sold and shut down TechTV. Coincindentally enough EGM and 1UP were also owned by Ziff Davis. That closure led to the creation of the Twit Army by Leo Laporte, Revision 3 with Patrick Norton and other members of Tech TV and now most famously Digg with Kevin Rose. I do hope that they will create something inspiring in the coming months so to monitor their activities I will be following them on Twitter and waiting for anything that comes up.

I guess the Sore Thumbs blog by Dan “Shoe” Hsu will now have more contributors.

2008 Final Fantasy Fan Festival

Yes, it’s that time of the year again where Final Fantasy fans gather together in California and see what’s coming to world of Vana’diel. This time it was held in Hollywood. Although personally it seemed that last year’s event in Anaheim was much better but still both events were completely sold out.

This year didn’t bring any surprise to the players since it had already been announced the three paid “upgrades” to the game. As opposed to the Wings of the Goddess expansion which took players to the past. This series will take us to the future.

Final Fantasy XI Preview for the PS2,PC,Xbox 360 from 1UP.com

EGM Editor in Chief James Mielke went to Hollywood and got an exclusive interview with the creators of the game.

Each chapter is a paid update. Unlike previous expansions which had entire story lines and new jobs and areas, these “chapters” are too short to require the printing of new discs and too long to be included in the monthly updates to the game.

October was quite a month

The month of October drained my wallet quite a bit. Even with the economic downturn and the weak exchange rate, I always believed in pumping in money into the economy to keep to running even if it’s just a little bit.

Games I got this month

  • Yakuza 2
  • Infinite Undiscovery
  • Fable II
  • Fallout 3
  • Rock Band 2
  • Guitar Hero: World Tour
  • Little Big Planet

While in New York I decided to get one myself,

Visit Our Muppet Whatnot Workshop Boutique at FAO Schwarz

It was supposed to open to November 13 and I was there for the soft opening on the 28th. It was either this or the Ugly Dolls. My brother and sister made the obvious choice, get a muppet. I ordered the Ugly Dolls online.

I’ll blog later this month as I scan the design book and my experience in general. I must say it was one of the best purchases I made this month. Mine is the one in bag on the left. She doesn’t have a name yet and I would welcome any suggestions.

And to top my October vacation experience, I got myself the new Mac Book Pro. Yes it is heavier by .1 lbs. but it is just sooo pretty. More pics and another blog post to follow as I get back to blogging.

It’s really hard to blog while on vacation.
