Rumor: Dragon Age major update in March

Both Kotaku and 1UP.com are reporting that 2009 RPG of the Year Dragon Age will be getting a huge expansion in March. Currently listed as Dragon Age: Awakening. According to the report, the expansion will take place after the storyline of DAO and will introduce a new character and a new origin story. Unlike the current available expansions, this one is said to clock in at 15 hours of gameplay.

Then there’s the cost. The rumored street price between $30-40 USD for the PC version with a more expensive Xbox version. No PS3 version was mentioned.

CO-OP episode 0305 mentioned that Bioware has prepared 2 years of DLC on Bioware to keep fans busy over the next few months.

These DLCs have been quite controversial with gamers. EA reports $1 Million in DLC sales for Dragon Age. This is interesting since almost all of the DLCs were given away for free with the exception of “Warden’s Keep”. The mainreason why this DLC has been downloaded so many times is the fact that after completing the quest, you gain access to a party chest where you can store an unlimited number of items. In my first playthrough, I was selling a lot of items and destroying a lot as well since there was a 120 item limit to your inventory. This expansion then became a necessity to play the game.

But the cost is something for some gamers to take pause before buying this for an additional 15 hours more gameplay. Unless of course you’re as addicted as me. But if the rumors are to be believed, does it mean that I have to create a new character just for this expansion? I can’t bring my über character that I built with all the armor and weapons that I’ve accumulated? That would really suck for me. But there’s no mention yet on what happens to your companions.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT

Maybe Bioware will apply the same mechanics they’re doing with Mass Effect 2, where your choices affect the events of the next game. To put it simply, your choices determine if Commander Shepard continues on the next game. If you’re moving through Dragon Age at a good pace, you know that certain dialogue choices can make you lose certain party members.

END SPOILER ALERT

Bioware has laid down the foundation for a very expansive RPG series. There are some elements that will remind you of Dragonlance and Lord of the Rings but will still maintain a certain uniqueness to it. I am pretty sure that we will be able to explore the entire world of Thedas in the years to come.

Return to Ostagar Trailer

Here’s the trailer to the next Dragon Age DLC. Available for the PC, Xbox360, PS3.

Return to Ostagar

Dragon Age Origins – Return to Ostagar

To those who haven’t bought or played Dragon Age yet, I suggest you do. I haven’t played a game to death like this in a very long time. Come January 5, the next DLC for 2009’s RPG of the Year will finally be released.

Highlights:

– One more chance to get the dog.
– Obtain the king’s armor.
– Most probably kill more darkspawn.

Available on January 5 for the PC, Xbox360 and PS3. Mac version not available yet.

Dragon Age comes to the Mac

Dragon Age: Origins – Sacred Ashes Trailer

Dragon Age Origins

Mac users will not have to wait an eternity to get their hands on possibly the best RPG to come out in this console generation. Like those of it’s PC and console versions, the initial release of the game will include codes for the various expansion sets available for the game.

I will admit that this game has sucked me in. I have spent the past month playing this game endlessly, not to mention that I have completed it twice and will be going in for third try.

Mac users will not be disappointed with the game and I hail Bioware/ EA for making this possible this holiday season. Now I’m thinking of getting the game again. Hmmm…

Final Fantasy XIV Beta Test applications begin

I’ve been playing the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI since it came out on the PS2 in 2004 up until today. The prospect of testing the next MMO coming out next year is quite exciting. Interested individuals can sign up here. The game is expected to be released for PCs and the PS3 sometime in 2010.

So it’s not a perfect game

After almost a lifetime of waiting (five years in gaming is practically a console cycle) Final Fantasy 13 will finally be released in Japan TODAY. The famed Famitsu gaming magazine has given the game an imperfect score of 39/40.

The only Final Fantasy game to receive the honor is FF12. Fan favorite Final Fantasy 7 earned 38, while the PS2 FF 10 earned a similar 39/40.

Only four games have been awarded this year the coveted “perfect score”. Those include Bayonetta, Super Mario Brothers, Dragon Quest 9 and Monster Rancher 3.

Many gamers are fickle folk who will read heavily into reviews before making a purchase, while others will buy the game regardless if it was good or not based on reviews just as long as it had the franchise name on it (Final Fantasy, Guitar Hero and so on…). So does one point matter?

I think the game will still be hit. Despite many advances in RPGs by Bioware with Mass Effect and Dragon Age as well as Fallout and Oblivion with Bethesda, there are still a lot gamers who still like the linear gameplay and beautiful cutscenes. I for one will still buy the game. Square-Enix has shipped 2 million copies of the game for the launch.

So the game did not get the perfect score from Famitsu. It will still sell millions, just one point shy of the perfect score merely tells gamers that, it’s good ,but not perfect for us, but still good.

But for gamers such as myself, April is still too far away for me. I’ll try not care until then. But here’s a thought, was the international release date pushed to spring just so they can release the Xbox version at the same time? I hope not. Because if they did, I would rather be playing it anyway on the PS3 than to wait for the Xbox version to catch up.

FFXIII North American release on March 9, 2010

Yes, it was released to the gaming press before PlayStation Home aired it. But at least March is much much better than December 2010.

Waiting and waiting for a trailer

Players are now waiting in the lobby of the movie theater in Playstation Home eagerly awaiting for the Final Fantasy 13 trailer which is due in less than an hour. Will it finally announce a release date for the rest of the world? Why would Square-Enix go through all the trouble in creating a countdown to November 13 (which is Friday the 13th FYI) just for a trailer.

Whatever it is, we’ll know soon enough.

Freeware PS3 Media Server

ps3mediaserver – Project Hosting on Google Code

If you’re like me who doesn’t own a PC to stream media to the PS3 then this free alternative is a good idea. It runs on macs, PCs and Linux and developed on the Java platform.

It’s fairly simple to use if you know your way around media servers but to put it simply, it gets the job done. I’m using my mac mini  ( not the latest but the first generation intel Mac mini with 2 GB of RAM to do this. It automatically sets up the DNLA protocols necessary to communicate with the PS3 and automatically sets the movie folder in your home folder as the default source for the media. You can add additional folders as well.

But what makes this piece of software great is the transcoding. Up until now, we’ve always been dependent on the formats that the consoles supported and it hasn’t been easy. Not all avi files would play, incompatible condec and so on that it’s been quite a challenge to play anything off a home media server to the PS3 but it all changes with this software and it’s built in transcoder.

Yes folks it has a built in transcoder which will allow you to transcode in almost faster than real time any format to make it PS3 friendly.  That means all your mkv, avi, ogg, and so on will be transcoded in almost real time. Note that I stress almost real time. This is because results may vary on the processor, RAM and so on of your computer and may either be faster or slower.

Sound transmitted supports dolby digital or whatever audio encoding is in your files. Scrubbing through the movie may prove to be difficult for some formats since I’ve stated above that it may or may not be transcoding. This means that if the file is being transcoded, chances are you can’t skip any further than what has already been transcoded. So be warned. A mild inconvenience but nothing that should seriously affect the overall experience.

The PS3 automatically detects the presence of the media server and everything can be accessed from there. The one amazing thing I’m very very much impressed here is tha ability to select language. Yes I do mean the audio language of the file. The file format mkv is used mostly if there are multiple languages in the file. It’s like the DVD language menu option but can usually only be controlled or watched on a PC. PS3 Media Server ia able to dissect through the language options and send that information to the PS3 which will allow you to select your desired language.

The best part of this, it’s free. Yes, click on the link above to bring you to the developer’s page and download away. I do hope that they continue to develop and support this important piece of software and keep it free.

November 13 is important for Final Fantasy XIII

And no, the game will not be released tomorrow. But instead, Sony will fill the ten screens of Playstation Home with a new trailer! Yes, a trailer. But we are all hoping for something bigger than that. It could be the North American (English) release date which would be sweet. Then only for my happiness to be deflated by the sight of a Spring 2010 release date. Like sometime in May ; ;.

We only have a few hours to find out.
