AAA games, Are they worth it on the first buy?

Last year was a host of AAA games for the Xbox 360. Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Rock Band and all of them I trekked down my local game store and bought them the day it was released. Thus emptying my wallet of at least $60 per month.

But with all the bills and life that I have to go through sometimes buying these games at full price is not an option. Unless of course, I’m a huge fan. Exceptions that I have made are titles with the word “Final” and “Fantasy” in the title as well as “Gran”, “Turismo” and any combination of the word “Metal Gear Solid”. Grand Theft Auto 4 is to be released in the next few weeks, where even my brother has pre-ordered the game. Is spending all this money worth it on these games?

I only got into gaming in Christmas of 1999 where I bought the PS One with my cold hard earned cash. Pretty late compared to a lot of gamers. I do however own an Atari 2600 and various classic handhelds currently in my basement. But I never owned an NES, Super NES or a Sega Genesis. I did get a Sega Game Gear in 1993 but I mostly used it as a TV instead of a gaming device.

I had been burned a few times in the past like with “Okami”, “Shadow of the Colossus”, “God of War 1” and a few other titles that I paid full price only to see it drop to $19.99 in 3 months. That really pissed me off. I benefited from Nintendo’s slash of prices on the Gamecube in 2003 where they dropped the console to the sweet spot of $99 and all the games that I wanted were in the $19.99 range which was perfect for me.

But in today’s next gen gaming, where everyone is trying to recoup losses in making the console, deals are hard to find. Even the slashed down price of $29.99 is still pretty high. So where does this lead? Cheap ass gaming.

I scour the forums for deals. Swap my old games with a little cash to get newer ones and save my money for that “must have” game. The last deal I got, a once played Devil May Cry for the 360. I haven’t played it yet, but at least it wasn’t full price.

Absolute Virtue

This is the only creature/ notorious monster that remains undefeated in FFXI. So to give players hint, Square-Enix released this five minute video on how they defeated Absolute Virtue.

Clever guys. At the most critical point, they zoom into the chat screen so you don’t really see what’s going on.

It took them roughly a few hours to defeat as far as I know. I’ll check if I can get my linkshell to do this uicide run for kicks.

David Hayter’s MGS 20th Year Tribute

Just a little something to tide Metal Gear fans until June.

Best PS3 commercial I’ve seen so far

The nice thing about this PS3 ad is that it’s not all about explosions and graphics. But instead it focuses on the personal experience and at times the shared experience of owning the console. Much like the HP ads a few years back. At least it’s not as campy as “Wii would like to play.”

Macworld 2008

Apple Introduces MacBook Air—The World’s Thinnest NotebookMacBook Air open.

The keynote has finally come and announcements have finally been made. Of course nothing could possibly top the iPhone anouncement last year so some people’s might be a little disappointed with the events in San Francisco.

Steve Jobs takes the stage and the world listens. So first off,

1. Time Capsule – Wireless backup device or so they say

There’s a lot that this device has to offer. Think of putting a terabyte of hard drive in an airport extreme base station and you get Time Capsule. The gigabyte ethernet connection should improve the remote backup system that Time Capsule promises but only for Leopard users.

If you’re on Leopard and you need a lot of backup and a wireless N router as well, the price is quite good.

2. iPhone and iPod Touch software Updates 1.1.3

The iPhone finally got some 21st century feature such as forwarding of sms messages and mutli-recipient sending capabilities. The iPod Touch however is a different story. Applications that were default on the iPhone are now “default” on the iPod Touch such as Mail, Stocks, Weather, Notes and Maps. The big catch is that it’ll cost early adapters (such as myself) TWENTY DOLLARS!. But it will be free on all new iPod Touch sold.

Now I’m a big fan and I liked Apple for not charging a whole lot for their software updates but this is crazy. Charging for something that should have been in the first place and screwing loyal fans who paid for the device when it first came out. I mean where’s the love Steve?!?! And what about regions where there is no local iTunes store such as every place in the world with the exception of Europe and Japan. Where are they going to get their updates? On a disc sold at the store?!? bad move in my opinion. While a jailbreaked iPod Touch does a whole lot more. Tsk tsk. We’ll wait and see on this one.

3. iTunes Movie Rentals and the Apple TV Take 2

Apple TV was admittedly a big flop for Apple and they’re trying again with the Take 2 version. The first version needed another computer where all the media is stored and purchased and is just played on the Apple TV. I guess most people with macs just bought either a 360 or a PS3 or any other device on the market and just pay $20 for software that will stream everything (except DRM content) to your TV.

The movie rentals is a big improvement and all of the major labels are involved. Obviously they need the money. The prices however are something else. It is cheaper than buying the movie outright but renting it is kinda iffy. The good thing about it is the HD content that is finally available in the store and the ability to purchase or rent movies and songs without having to go all the way to your computer.

Now how do I sync content that I buy off the Apple TV to my iTunes and iPods?

4. It’s lighter than air.

Apparently the big announcement of the day was the “ultra thin” macbook air. Hmm. It’s thin. It’s got stuff that the Macbook doesn’t but the price tag puts it waaay out of the hands of the regular consumer.

The good:
1. Thin
2. Backlit keyboard
3. Full features of OSX
4. $99 for an external superdrive is not so bad

The bad:
1. Pricey $1799 +++ (sure it’s cheaper than Japanese portables but it wont hold against those made in China)
2. One USB port (EEPC has four)
3. No Firewire (Why sell the option of FCP Express at the store when you can’t connect the camera)
4. No built in ethernet. (But you can buy an add on)

So will I get one? Wait and see as always. There’s still a lot that Apple needs to do about it and let all the bugs crawl out. The price has to go down though. It is very expensive. If it had all the firewire and USB ports that I need, then maybe it would warrant a purchase. But as of the moment. This is one expensive toy.

Will you buy a PS3 this year?

Sony cuts PlayStation 3 production cost in half – Engadget

Now I almost feel bad that I bought one last year for $499. Hmmm. Not! I will not predict a price drop anytime soon. It just puts the PS3 within finally making money. Boosted by it’s major coup against HD-DVD last week this could spur more blu-ray sales this year. With the release of AAA games (finally) such as MGS4 and Little Big Planet, things look a lot better for the gaming giant after trailing both the Wii and Xbox in the past year. Add the fact that the 20 and 60 GB versions in Japan will be discontinued as well.

Back from Vacation

I know it’s really been a while since I updated my blog and now’s the chance. I’ll try to sum up the past two weeks of my Thanksgiving vacation and everything that I’ve done over the next few days.

November was a financially tough month for gamers since a whole lot of games came out for practically every platform. Gears of War was released for Windows, Rock Band, Ace Combat 6, Beautiful Katamari, NBA franchise games, NFL franchise games, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, PSP Slim, Final Fantasy Online: Wings of the Goddess, Sim City Societies, and the list goes on and on.

I had to pass on the Ace Combat flight stick and Rock Band due to the size of the boxes that these things came in. I wasn’t willing to pack the thing and haul it across the Pacific knowing that it would probably get here. I was right there when Rock Band came out and everyone walking into the store was walking out with one. Oh the pain and the agony of not having one. I pride myself of being a pretty good Guitar Hero player and not being able to play it is just heart wrenching.

Anyway, moving on. I finally jumped in and bought a PS3 with my cold hard earned cash. I outright bought DiRT and Heavenly Sword. My cousins had already gotten a PS3 some months before and I must admit. Even if all the good games at the moment are on the Xbox, I still like coming home to the Playstation. There is no dual shock right now, but it does not negate my experience of rally racing on DiRT. In fact, I think I actually played better on the PS3 than on the Xbox.

I’ll post some more on my vacation, unfortunately a SD card corruption caused me to lose all the pictures I took on Thanksgiving so I wont be posting any pictures.

Something that should have been with the elite

Xbox 360 to get built-in HD DVD drive in late 2008? – Engadget

This is just so late. This should have been with the Elite that came out nine months ago. It’s like an unwanted child that was aborted at the last minute before they made the delivery. It might have made a difference where HD-DVD is at the moment. Yes, I know that the HD wars is far from over but the amount of money that I’ve spent on my Xbox 360 to get it into HD is probably the same amount that I would have spent to get a PS3.

And what does this do to all of us early adopters? Well we just got screwed over by Microsoft. At least I haven’t bought anything non-game related at the Xbox Marketplace only to discover that I can’t transfer any of it to a Zune (if I ever owned one). Let’s see how this pans out this Holiday. Maybe at the same time they would finally fix all those overheating 3RL errors.

Halo Day

Bungie.net

By now, Halo 3 is in the hands of many Xbox owners in North America. It is currently set to be the largest gaming event since the console launches of Nintendo and SONY last year.

I know I stopped blogging about games here. But I got tired of moving from one blog to another and it seems that my gaming views are not that far off from my tech views. So to kick off my return to blogging about games, I shall begin with Halo 3.

I never owned the original Xbox, although I’ve played through the original game on my mac (ironically was originally created for the mac before Bungie was acquired by Microsoft) I skipped the second installment (it came out the same time as Metal Gear Solid 3) and now we have Halo 3.

It cannot be denied that this is the one game that somehow kept the original Xbox in the gaming map but now it enters into very different territory. It’s life begins as the console is the number 1 selling next generation console (although debatable with Wii sales still surging a year after launch). Most people buying the game originally had the first two games on the original Xbox and now it has a much bigger audience with the success of Gears of War and Bioshock. No doubt they will buy the game (I would too). But it’s on the heels of their recent admission of hardware failures.

This is the one thing that brings this game (and so many others) to a level even below of the PS3. Consumer confidence is quite low on the hardware itself. Everyone I’ve known who owns a 360 has had it repaired or replaced within 12 months of owning the thing. I also brought mine for replacement. This is sad. I am afraid of playing Forza even if they say that it wasn’t the game’s fault for breaking a console, but over 50 pages of user reports of hardware failure related to the game can’t all be wrong.

I’m sure the guys at Bungie did their job. And once I get my hands on the game I’ll post something here, but if the console that it plays on wont last long enough for me to finish the game (or any other for that matter) it’s a sad waste of gaming greatness.

Every Metal Gear Solid game to be re-released

According to 1up.com who states that popular gaming news site IGN says that Konami is re-releasing all MGS games in Japan as part of the 20th anniversary of the franchise. The games will be re-priced and released in their original format. No word yet if this will be available outside of Japan.

I can’t believe that Solid Snake has been around for twenty years already. I still haven’t gotten far in the PSP version which is the direct sequel to the MGS3 Snake Eater. I’m sure people have much better records than I have but my proudest achievement was finishing Snake Eater in less than 3 days and I have a day job. The problem with doing that is I don’t want to play it all over again. Just thinking what I had to go through to finish the first time I played it, even though it was fun, I don’t think I can play it again.

The only MGS game I played over and over again was the Twin Snakes gamecube version. Because they added some of the moves that were introduced in the Sons of Liberty version, it made the game a whole lot easier. Not to mention the graphics were very much improved. So much so that there is speed version of it somewhere in the web.

I do hope that they release it in North America. I’d probably get the PS1 version since it’s the only one I don’t have. Wouldn’t it be nice if it was released at the same time as MGS4?
