Hell has frozen over

Square Enix: Final Fantasy XIII Coming To Xbox 360

I’m sorry PS3 fans. It has happened. FFXIII is coming to the 360. The unthinkable has happened. Although it was not the only driver for me in buying the PS3 in the first place but it seems that the game has regionalized the gaming world with Japan with the PS3 and US and Europe for both the PS3 and 360.

Probably due to high production costs and low user base of the PS3, this prompted Square-Enix in sealing a deal with Microsoft. Surprisingly, in an interview with 1up.com, FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase says that development for the Xbox 360 version hasn’t actually begun. This means that this deal was made very recently. Hmmm.

But still, a lot of Square-Enix development is currently on the 360 with eventual release on the PS3. Are the days of exclusive games coming to an end?

It will be interesting to see how the 360 version will pan out with the game originally made with blu-ray in mind. Imagine cramming over 50GB of data on a number of DVDs on the 360.

Does this strike a nail in the coffin for the PS3? That remains to be seen. But personally, I’ll be getting this game on the PS3 because I prefer the controller and interface that Sony brings.

E3 Predictions

E3 is just next week. And everyone is trying to predict what the gaming universe will unveil. Some are expected but we are looking for the unexpected.

Here are just some of mine.

Animal Crossing for the Wii
A new version of the Xbox 360 console
A new version of the PS3
Xbox handheld to compete with the DS and PSP
An even smaller Nintendo DS
New controllers for the Xbox and the PS3
Major game for the iPhone

Some things I wish they would announce at E3
PS1 downloadable games for the PSP
Pikmin for the Wii
New HD Wii console
PS2 downloadable games for the PS3
Bungie is no longer Xbox exclusive
Rock Band instruments would finally work with all Guitar Hero games (at least the PS3 and 360 ones)
God of War 3 for the PS3
Shadow of the Colossus 2 for the PS3

I’ll probably write about more things before Monday.

Apparently Naomi Hunter is too hot for my PS3

After seeing Naomi Hunter appear in the game for the first time and was watching the briefing of Act 2, my PS3 decides to die on me at this particular moment. The PS3 stopped reading the disc. I restarted the PS3 but other games that I pop in are not detected. Oh the agony. It just stopped on me. So what else would a gaming addict do? Go to the store and buy another one.

I did it without thinking. I know I can call Sony and have my console “repaired”. But it still sucks for me. I’ll be spending my evening trying to transfer everything over to the new PS3.

I love my 60GB PS3. It allows me to play PS2 games on it (which I still have a lot). The hard drive size is just right. It still is the best PS3 console around. I’ll still have to repaired. But in the meantime, I’ll have to be content with this 40GB one.

Will the next console war be on handhelds?

Xbox 360: Would You Buy This Portable 360?

Piracy effectively killed PC gaming or has it in it’s death grip, thus shifting the focus of developers and gamers alike to consoles. With HD gaming already ehre with resolutions we thought we’d never see the PS3 and the Xbox 360 seem to be in it for a while until they release the next version. Nintendo has not taken the HD transition as seriously as the other two.

So if we are not expecting a new console in next week’s E3, what hardware are we expecting from the gaming world?

Handhelds have been around for while now. Before it was only Nintendo and then Sony entered with their PSP. Sales in Japan show that handhelds are easily outselling their bulky brethren. Does this mean that gaming is switching to something more portable?

I always carry in my bag my DS and PSP so anywhere I go, I can just play or continue where I left off. Not like what’s happening to me right now with my console. I am unable to progress through Metal Gear Solid 4 because I’m working all the time and I barely have time at home to play on my console.

This is what Apple is betting on with their iPhone apps which were showcased in Apple’s World Wide Developer’s Conference. Sega’s Super Monkey Ball using the accelerometer of the iPhone (or iPod Touch) as the controller is really something to behold.

With Apple jumping on to portable gaming (sort of), how long before Microsoft comes in with their own handheld? Here now comes E3, where almost all major hardware gaming announcements are made and will they be entering the fray?

They already have Xbox Live Arcade. There had always been a restriction to the size of the games, could this be the reason? But if I were to play Xbox games on a portable device, this may be viable for 1st Gen Xbox games due to the large size of 360 games. But I think it could be possible. Imagine playing in ad hoc mode Halo on a portable device anywhere.

Throwing in a phone is a bit too much in my opinion. That would make it too obvious that it’s trying to compete with the iPhone. Remember N-Gage?

But I do believe that the next console war will be on the handhelds. Not that console gaming is dying. But with free time now becoming an expensive commodity, handheld gaming is the way to go.

Finally I’ve had some time with my PS3

Working sucks. Working really hard sucks even more especially if it takes me away from a AAA game that is Metal Gear Solid 4.

I’ve finally had some time with the game and met Drebin. Yes that’s how slow I’m going through game. It’s so bad that I haven’t been back on my Wii Fit. I need a new job schedule.

But back to MGS4 which I think is awesome. A friend of mine says it’s easier than MGS3, which I insanely played for 3 days straight. This is something that I cannot do with this time around. I think they could have made another game with the amount of content in this one but I’m satisfied. I’m still trying to get used to the controls and the actions. It’s been a while since I played a MGS game. I wasn’t even able to finish the one on the PSP.

This game does not disappoint. You will need some background before playing the game. To fully understand and experience the game, you should have spent spring playing through the 3 MGS games.

I just started playing so this is a very early review. But from what I’ve seen so far. It’s well worth the wait.

These are the times I wished I was in the U.S.

Hideo Kojima HMV Metal Gear Solid 4 Signing Session (Engsub)

Metal Gear Solid 4 came out last Thursday and Hideo Kojima was in the U.S. to sign autographs in New York and then to the Metreon in San Francisco on the 14th.

I’ll be going on a business trip next week so my updates may either be short or none at all. Hopefully I’ll be so busy that I wouldn’t notice that I’m the only one with a PS3 not playing MGS4. I won’t get my hands on it until Saturday or Sunday next week at the earliest. Sigh. Why do I have to work to be able to afford all the games I play?

RPG on the 360

Square-Enix announced in Japan yesterday, not one, not two, not three, but FOUR new RPGs for the Xbox 360.

Star Ocean 4, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant and Tales of Vesperia will all be heading to the 360. It is widely known that the Xbox isn’t exactly performing as desired in Japan despite their “success” in North America. One of the reasons for this is the lack of “real” RPGs in Japan.

Mistwalker Studios, a company made up of former Square-Enix employees released Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey for the 360, but it failed to move console sales.

Will Square-Enix come to the rescue for the Xbox? I for one would actually buy all four to feed by RPG addiction. It may boost sales in Japan. But it’s no Final Fantasy.

Yes, PS3 owners are doomed to wait in 2009, or worse yet 2010. But it’s Final Fantasy. It’s not one, but two FF games at the same time. And there aren’t any other RPGs coming out in the horizon which makes the Xbox a lot more fortunate than the PS3.

If these RPGs somehow manage to move Xboxes out the door in Japan then it’s quite a feat and a great recovery for the Xbox in Japan. But if these games do not move in North America, then I wouldn’t be surprised if Square-Enix ports these games to the PS3 at a later date.

Wii Fit Hula Hoop makes you look stupid

This is the reason why I will never post a video of myself using the Wii Fit.

Why I found Uncharted better than Indy 4

One of the biggest summer movies this year is Indiana Jones. Uncharted is a video game exclusive to the PS3 and is considered as one of the best on the system. One is a movie franchise that was very popular last century and the other is a new video game series. Indy is an archaeologist while Nathan Drake is a grave robber. Both look like scruffy looking nerf herders (if you don’t know where that line came from you don’t deserve to call yourself a science fiction fan) and is generally unkempt.

Both storylines deal with the search of the missing city of “El Dorado”. Both have older “sidekick” buddies and a female interest who always gets in the way. Indy has one car/ motorcycle chase after another. Uncharted has one car chase and a lot of climbing and jumping around and best of all jet skis.

Villains are not American. Uncharted has Latin American pirates and thugs (and more since I don’t want to spoil it, let’s just say Indy and Uncharted have villians in common). Indy has stereotype Nazis and Russian KGB.

Nathan Drake always has a loaded gun in his pocket, whereas Indy is content in carrying a bull whip.

So what makes Uncharted more appealing than Indiana Jones?

Is Uncharted more attuned to the times than Indy? Indy 4 is set during the height of the cold war and the nuclear arms race while Uncharted is established as today.

The previous 3 incarnations of the franchise was released at the height of the cold war, where anyone who lived in Eastern Europe, most especially Russia were deemed the enemy. The western world believed in the world that Indy lived in.

But in the 4th? It seems that Lucas and Spielberg were unable to suspend my disbelief. I could see too many metaphors from Indy4 to what the world is going through now. The same stunts and tricks used in the past 3 movies kept coming up. If you follow the series carefully, you can actually predict what was going to happen next.

Uncharted gave us an adventure similar to the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider series but the team at Naughty Dog (the people who made Uncharted) created a world that could actually exist today. Not to mention, it didn’t try to tackle things such as saving the world or good vs. evil. Even though it was a videogame, the story had a mystery in it that we wanted to uncover. There were too many odd things being thrown in but it would make you continue on playing the game. In short, it was interesting.

Uncharted is a game and Indy is a movie. Uncharted isn’t exactly a runaway hit on the PS3 as GTA4 is. And despite the flaws in the movie, Indy will still make money in the box office and DVD sales.

Does this mean that Hollywood is getting old? Not yet (but it seems like it). More people still go to the movies than play videogames. But It cannot be denied that videogames are now making more money than movies. If videogames suddenly become an art form. Then things may look a little different in the next couple of years.
